The Art Program at California State University in Sacramento is designed to provide students with a wide range of experiences in the visual arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and other media. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the program offers students the chance to transfer to a four-year college or university. Having worked as a curator in the region for 43 years, I have seen four artists with extraordinary energy. Through courses, exhibitions, conferences and public programs, the Sacramento State Department of Art provides an environment for students to become the next generation of artists, academics, and educators.
Students can apply their experience to the art of teaching in conjunction with the supervising instructor. This course builds on the drawing skills presented in ART 300 and covers more complex problems of observation, personal expression, and formal exploration of composition. It also provides students with the opportunity to study art subjects not included in the current course offering. Students will explore major topics in the history of public art in the Americas, including monuments, memorials, murals, graffiti, and new media art.
This includes experiences in planning and installing exhibitions, inventorying and maintaining a permanent art collection, participating in staff and teaching activities, and outreach programs for galleries and students. Degrees in art allow people to work in the educational field as teachers, as well as in museums, restorers and galleries. This class examines the history of Northern California art in the 1970s, focusing on the Sacramento metropolitan area and on the art and artists that emerged from the protest movements that defined the era. In accordance with the university's Anchor Initiative, the department extends its influence to the community by engaging its faculty, staff, and students in public art projects, outreach to K-12 students, and partnerships with cultural organizations.
